Translation Needed, Labs - cjs - 02-14-2014 I was hoping for an 'exotic' translation for my part of tomorrow night's Tamale Dinner menu. I'm taking a marinated mushroom dish for an appie - "Citrus Marinated Mushrooms" I get "Citrus Marinado Mushrooms" - is that it?? But, I like what I got for Beef Tamales - "Tamales de carne de vacuno" is this how they ought to be added to the menu?? Thanks. Re: Translation Needed, Labs - cjs - 02-14-2014 Or someone..... Re: Translation Needed, Labs - labradors - 02-14-2014 Quote: Sure thing! Quote: Hongos Marinados en Cítricos or Champiñónes Marinados en Cítricos or (I think mostly South American) Setas Marinadas en Cítricos (in some regions, however, setas are, more specifically, oyster mushrooms). Quote: Tamales de Res or Tamales de Carne or Tamales de Carne de Res Although carne does mean "meat," in general, when used by itself in that kind of contact, it usually means "beef." The first option would be my choice, Vacuno refers to bovines or cattle, in general, but it could also mean "I vaccinate. Vaca would be the word for "cow." Of course, we don't say "cow" for the meat used as food, we say "beef," Likewise, res would be "beef." Again, if you ARE planning to use Spanish, when you give ONE of those tasty morsels to a guest, it will be a [i]tamal[i]. Anything else? Re: Translation Needed, Labs - Cubangirl - 02-14-2014 I would say tamal/es con carne de res since the tamales are not made from meat but rather have meat in them but that is just me. Re: Translation Needed, Labs - labradors - 02-14-2014 I could see that. There also could be regional differences. Here, Tamales de Res is the norm, since there's already the assumption that they're going to be banana leaves (not corn husks) wrapped around a filling containing masa and maybe some other ingredients. When those other ingredients are particular highlights, then the name becomes Tamales de _____. In addition, there are Tamalitos de Elote, which are small, corn-husk wrapped tamales without masa, but with puréed kernels of the corn cut off the cobs from which the husks were obtained.
