Travelling - labradors - 10-09-2007

Will be travelling Wednesday and Thursday to accompany a family to Tegucigalpa (the capital of Honduras) to visit the American embassy in order to get the visas necessary for the mother and ten-year-old daughter of that family to go to the States for the thyroid-cancer surgery the daughter needs. The trip shouldn't be any problem - in fact, it will be quite restful, as I will describe below, but the biggest prayer concern would be that the folks at the embassy will APPROVE the visas for the mother and daughter - our going to the embassy does not guarantee anything, but is just a part of the process.

As mentioned above, the trip, itself should be quite pleasant. This particular bus service (http://www.vianatransportes.com) is such a wonderfully comfortable ride that I always enjoy these excursions. The seats are super soft, and the bus is VERY well air conditioned. In addition, they have attendants who are like "flight attendants," but for the bus. They give you a blanket and pillow for the trip, periodically come through with something to drink, and even serve simple but good sandwiches as meals. The bus also has a few well-placed TV monitors over which they play movies on DVD during the trip. It makes the 7.5-hour trip VERY comfortable, and it only costs $23 per person, each way. Greyhound could learn a LOT from them.

They will be going to the National Cancer Institute in Maryland to see a couple of real hot-shot specialists for the particular, rare variety of thyroid cancer she has. Unlike some types of surgery (such as the girl, a few months ago, who had scoliosis), this will be a rare opportunity for the very cutting edge of available treatment, since they will actually be accepting her into part of one of their studies and clinical trials. Since this is such a rare type of the disease, the doctors are grateful to have someone else to be able to study. Thus, it is a true win-win situation: the doctors are able to study the effects of certain treatments and medications while the girl will get medical attention that could save her life. Of course, it IS cancer, so there's no guarantee of a "magic pill," but this will be as good as it can get.

Here's a picture of Maria (mother) and Allis (daughter):

Hope all goes well today. Lab, and they get their Visas with no problem. Once again, a reminder of how lucky we are. This is a great opportunity for this little girl. It would be a shame to lose out on this chance because of red tape.

I'll be thinking of you today.

I pray all goes well for them.

Re: Travelling - labradors - 10-12-2007

Things went well and, compare to the last time I did this, relatively quickly. The embassy gave them two-year visas, and if additional trips are necessary beyond that time, we'll nee to go through the process again, with renewed proof that someone will be paying for all the trips.

At this point, I don't know exactly when their trip to the States will be, but the actual visas will be delivered to us in five days, and the doctor, in the States, who will be handling this has requested to see her on the 22nd. Thus, it will be very soon!

Thanks for your prayers.
