Have you ever heard this statement? "White wine expires after 2 years."

I heard this statement again this weekend and wish I knew the real answer. To me, this sounds like a misleading statement. Can anyone here clarify this for me and others who may be confused?

I'd have to say as a rule of thumb this is a correct statement. White wines do not keep like reds. They don't have the tannins that reds do.

Jean is right. I do have a couple of real French Chablis that get better for years if stored properly. As a rule drink your whites within 2-3 years. I understand good German Reislings last too, I don't have much experience with them.

Not true about Trockenbeerenauslese riesling at all.

But as has been stated most whites are designed and bottled to be drank in one to two years from release.

However all whites will keep for years if stored properly. So the need to get rid of a white because it is over two years old is a fabrication of the truth. They just don't open up or bloom after two years if they were tight to start with upon release.

On its side, in the fridge is correct. Long term storage means you want it close to 32 as possible.

Ok for me I was always told that wines were to be stored at about 50-55 degrees.

So if you have wine fridge you put your reds at the top and your whites at the bottom.

That temperature is correct for normal storage with the whites at the bottom and the reds near the top.

But for long term storage of whites, you want it very very cold.
