I tried it once with Laura, but either her connection or mine, or both, made it so choppy it was best to just talk to her on the phone and send pictures

Pictures take more bandwidth so, depending upon your connection, using the webcam could chop up the audio, but using audio without the camera will work with lower speeds than needed by the video.
Since I use Vonage, all of my phone calls to or from the States are over the Internet, so I've experienced what a difference more bandwidth makes, as our cable company has gone from something that was the bare minimum for Vonage to work to something where I can actually watch YouTube videos now. It's still not the speed of the U.S. cable companies, but MUCH better than before.
Even so, for skype, I still just stay with voice, since I tend to use it only when the conversation has been planned ahead of time.
