Re: (...)
Okay, so I want to make that Vanilla Cider Pork with Pears recipe and it calls for the sacrifice of a vanilla bean and its innards.
But it's only going to be cooked for a few minutes.
Can it be reused? Can it be saved for later use?
Barbara~~~wants to save the bean...

The first two times I made this I actually used vanilla extract because I didn't have a bean and I didn't want to spend $9, yes $9 on ONE at the store. I've since found a mail order place where they are about 1/4 of the price. Turned out fine with the extract!

The only problem I can see, Barbara is if the bean picks up too much flavor from the dish. I reuse mine quite a few time (in fact some of my kaluha has 5 or 6 beans in it after a few batches), but I only use them in the kaluha.
Wish I could help more. someone will come along and help.

Is it too late to add, I rinsed the bean off well and stuck it in a bottle of vodka with some Splenda. The vodka is great, I don't notice any pork taste......but then again, I wouldn't
