Chocolate Pie Dough

  Re: (...)
I saw this recipe/idea while we were on the road last month and made it up, but stuck it in the freezer when I just ran out of time.

Since I wanted to make the Cacao gelato for today (the 4th) thought little pie dough tarts might make for a fun presentation so thawed it out. Don't know if I posted the recipe somewhere but here it is -

Chocolate Pie Crust*****

Blogger Paula Jones from Bell'alimento shows us how to make chocolate pie crust. - 6/11/13 made this 6/20/13 and stuck in freezer/now it's 7/2/13 and I'm going to try it for the 4th

1 Pillsbury® refrigerated pie crust, softened as directed on box
1 Tbs unsweetened baking cocoa
1 1/2 tsp powdered sugar

1. Unroll pie crust. Place cocoa and powdered sugar in center.

2. Fold pie crust in half and then in half again.

3. Knead (or use a stand mixer with dough hook attachment) until evenly mixed. Use to make crust as directed in desired pie recipe.

4. Expert Tips

5. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and place in refrigerator until you’re ready to roll.

6. For a sweeter crust, add more powdered sugar.

7. To bake: 450° 10-12 minutes

Great idea! I think they'd be delicious filled with an ice cream sundae (especially a turtle--caramel, fudge, and toasted pecans)!

That is really a cool idea, Jean!

For the gelato, did you just use a vanilla gelato recipe and add in the nibs? And, where do you buy cacao nibs? Don't know that I've seen them, but was never really looking for them either...

Maryann, I don't remember where I picked the nibs up. I don't remember making vanilla gelato either, but I'll post the recipe in the a.m. And you can compare.

Denise, we really loved it,too!
