Our trip to the Carniceria

We needed a few things - chiles and banana leaves for my lamb shanks and a cafeteria tray for Bob's computer (it involves his computer and liquids).

We also figure that we need to experiment a little more since our long range plans appear to include a trip to, and perhaps relocation to Ecuador or Panama - and this store has foods and ingredients from all over Latin/South America. This is also the store where we get our pork bellies and a fair amount of produce.

We found some new ingredients I'm going to research before I buy them (Huazontle & guaje???) Now - the big find of the day was in the freezer section, a little bit past the quail, right below the shrimp - stingray for $2.99 a lb! Right now I'm afraid even tuna is more seafood than I want (oystered out!). I did a little research and I gather that both cook and taste the same. I think we'll probably go back and get some next week.

Also, got a yellow "sweet lime" that I'm looking forward to trying. Fun day.

Yeah, what's up??

Sting Ray and oysters taste and cook similar?? I've never run across it, but I'll sure look for it.

No Jean - stingray doesn't taste like oysters - I've been told that it tastes like scallops. I had a griend in CA that raved and raved about skate wing, said it was the best thing she'd ever eaten. Now to check out the sustainability of the fishery.

Oh . . . and that other little thing? Bob has been investigating this for months. It appears that a couple can live quite well in either country on under $2000 a month. Seniors get discounts on everything, medical care is excellent and cheap. The climate is good, there are beaches, mountains. Lots of Expats are down there and we are asking them relevant questions. And, yes Denise - the food! The adventures. The ability to travel in S.America.

Hmmm. Now that's brave. Couldn't imagine myself leaving the U.S. but there are adventurous people who happily do so.

Ron and I met a couple who did exactly that when we were on vacation one year in the Caribbean. They had been living on one of the islands for 2 years at the time, having sold everything they owned in the states before moving. They did, however, have family in Florida, so were able to fly back there two times a year to visit relatives and do all their medical stuff which they preferred to do in the U.S.

Jean can you share how you prepped the skate? No big hurry since I won't be getting any this week.

Sharon, this is too sudden! I'm not kissing any of your plans, but forget Eqador We have been there and Galapogus. You can't get anything that's not produced in Equadore They let you have Chilean wine , but they tell you catfish is flounder, pork tenderloin is beef, and God knows what else. You would be miserable. Socialist governments change constantly. Benefits change drastically.. No stability.
