NOTE:This came from an email a friend sent me seven years ago. With the exception of having fixed a few spelling errors, I have not made any other changes. Therefore, you will see that number 11 is NOT correct, since it is based upon a common mistake. The real carol is "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" (note the comma after "Merry"). The song is not expressing a wish for God to grant sleep, but is using an older English expression ("God rest ye merry"), to express a wish for God to grant peaceful sleep. Thus, the "merry" is NOT intended to describe the gentlemen. Of course, that would not produce the same wordy translation, nor the same effect.

Funny the things that stick in an OLD mind! Went to a party last weekend and they caroled us out - surprised the heck out of me how much I did NOT have to look at the words.

Printing this out and will see how I do later....
