Coriander sub?

  Re: (...)
I am making this recipe and I'm out of coriander. Is there a substitute?

Red Lentil Dal with kale

4 tsp canola oil
1 onion, chopped
½ tsp turmeric
2 tsp cumin
2 tsp coriander
1 tbsp freshly grated ginger
3 garlic cloves, minced or pressed
3 ½ cups vegetable stock
1 cup red lentils
1 bay leaf
1 bunch kale, washed and chopped
juice of 1 lemon

Heat oil in a pot over medium heat. Add onion, turmeric, cumin and coriander. Sauté for 5 minutes. Add ginger and garlic and cook for 2 more minutes.

Add stock, lentils and bay leaf. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 25 minutes. Add kale and cook for another 10 minutes or until lentils are soft and kale is tender. Remove bay leaf and stir in lemon juice. Serve as is or over rice.

Makes 4 servings

Ah ha! The reason I don't have coriander is because I have cilantro.

Well, I still went to my little bible - FLC and it mentions that lemon, sage and caraway have "an aromatic flavor akin to coriander"

so, if you find yourself without coriander or cilantro, you're alll set.

And that dish sounds very goood - duly copied!!

I added brown rice to my bowl of this soup. I also sprinkled red pepper flakes over it, and salt of course. It is very nice and I will enjoy it for lunches this week.

Thank you for double checking. I may add some sage and caraway. I also added more lemon than listed.

We are not fond of coriander or cilantro either so that is good info to have. I usually just avoid those recipes now I don't have to. I always have lemon and parsley.

Food Lover's Companion - it's a book with "definitions of nearly 6,000 food, drink, and culinary terms" authored by Sharon Tyler Herbst who, I think died at the end of last year - at too young of an age.

I hope you realize that the 'asap' was a joke, not demanding, lol.

I'll go check out the FLC. Sounds like a handy book to own.
