Made a neat discovery...

With Kambree and I having doctors visits in Des Moines yesterday Holly took the day off and we made a day of it...left the house before 7:00 am for Kambree's 8:45 am visit with a genetic specialist and my 11:00 am visit with the oncologist and then Kambree had to see the pediatrics doctor at 1:00 pm so we made the DAY and EVENING of it. I met the owners of a lovely fine dining steakhouse in Des Moines that are looking for a new Executive Chef and Sous Chef that are friends of Holly's family in Des Moines. Nice to meet new people. We also managed to visit two of the larger malls in West Des Moines...one was hosting POLE VAULTING in the mall as a part of the Drake University Relays. It was quite neat. Kambree discovered a 6 foot plus tall bulldog that just happened to be "alive" as it was the Drake University mascot Spike. She loved it...

At the other mall I made my big "discovery"...we had bought a bottle of "Red Sled 2006" from Southern Hills Winery in Osceola, Iowa a couple of winters ago and LOVED it. We purchased it in a "seasonal" store in Valley West Mall in West Des Moines. Well, on this trip we get off the elevator and I spot a Southern Hills Winery STORE in the mall! We went in and asked about the 2006 bottle of Red Sled. The girl working had us try the "Outback Zak" wine which is what the Red Sled is marketed as regularly...needless to say I got a bottle and am getting another to take to Holly's Grandmother's on Mother's Day. I also was able to get their listing of all of their wines, with descriptions, and their website... www.southernhillswinery.com or www.shwinery.com.

Can anyone guess where we are planing on going for Memorial Day weekend this year???

Cool website and it this place is only about 4.5 hours from our house! Didn't know Iowa had a winery. Kinda neat! Hubby and I may have to make a weekend trip sometime.

Sounds like a nice day in amongst the necessities. It is always so much fun to find a new treasure! Hope all is well with both you and Kambree. Keep up your spirits and know we are thinking of you.

Iowa actually has SEVERAL wineries. Before prohibition Iowa was the number six state in the US as far as growing grapes for wine. I know a handful of farmers that grow grapes. They still get more for one acre of grapes than 100 acres of corn. A few of the wineries in Southern Iowa are even going into the olive business as well. It is just a matter of time before they get that industry up and running around here.

So in addition to being one of the top producers of corn, soy beans and hogs; Iowa is also a leader in "finishing" beef, egg and chicken production and trying to return to its wine making past as well. Iowa is also looking at olive growing and oil production as I mentioned and is also home of three distilleries that are producing various forms of Vodka and other spirits. Some are "high end" spirits...could be why the overall economy in Iowa has not been hit as hard as other parts of the country. We are also home to many insurance and finance companies and have a growing "techie" base as well. All and all not a bad place to live and the potential for a great growth in the future...

*Interesting Laura...It is only about 2.5 hours south of my house...I am only about 2.5 hours south of Fairmont(?), Minnesota along I-90 I think it is...

Can't figure out what grapes they use. Have never heard of the grapes they use for their whites and they don't even mention what is used for their reds.... hmmmmm.

will certainly be looking into this on our trip around the country.
Retired and having fun writing cookbooks, tasting wine and sharing recipes with all my friends.
