Easier forum searching!

  Re: (...)
Tired of the difficulties and shortcomings of this forum's search feature? Tired of having to type in a "site:" parameter when using Google for improved search results? Here's how to harness the power of the Google search without always having to do as much typing.

The following "quick search" capability works in Firefox or Internet Explorer, but I'm not sure if anything similar exists for Opera, Safari, or Chrome. The methods of setting up Firefox and IE are different, however, so follow the instructions, below, that are appropriate for your browser.

FIREFOX
  1. Go to www.google.com so you'll be on an actual, Google search page.
  2. In the box where you would usually type a search key, right click.
  3. Select "Add a keyword for this search."
  4. In the box that appears, type "Cuisine at Home Forum" for the name, and "cuisine" for the keyword.
  5. [optional]In the "Create in" box, look to see if there is already a "Quick Searches" selection. If so, choose that. If not, you may create a "Quick Searches" folder, but it's not really necessary, and just makes it handy if you start using this same feature to create quick searches for a bunch of other sites and wish to group them together.
  6. Click "Add."
  7. In the menu bar at the top of the window, click "Bookmarks."
  8. Find the "Cuisine at Home Forum" bookmark that you just created, and right click on it.
  9. Select "Properties."
  10. Replace the content of the "Location" field with "http://www.google.com/search?q=%s+site%3Aforums.cuisineathome.com" (without the quotation marks).
  11. Click "OK."
  12. The quick search is now ready. To use it, go to the Firefox address bar (where you would normally type the address of a website), and type "cuisine" (without the quotes, of course), then a space, then whatever you wish to find in the Cuisine at Home forum (example: "cuisine focaccia"), and hit "ENTER."

  13. That's it! From now on, to search the Cuisine at Home forum, just use the "cuisine" quick search in the address bar.

INTERNET EXPLORER
Internet Explorer does not provide such an easy way to add a quick search, but it DOES have quick-search capability. To make it work, you need to add a value to the Windows registry. The following instructions are simple, do not require the use of the registry editor, but if you're still not comfortable with the thought of adding something to the registry, don't do it, and get Firefox, instead. Otherwise, here are the instructions:
  1. Copy the following text exactly:Code:
    Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[br][br][HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\cuisine][br]@="http://www.google.com/search?q=%s+site%3Aforums.cuisineathome.com"

  2. Start up Windows Notepad (START->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad).
  3. Paste the copied text into Notepad.
  4. In the menu bar at the top of the window, click "File."
  5. Select "Save as."
  6. Click the "Desktop" button.
  7. In the "File name" box, type "cuisine.reg" (without the quotes).
  8. In the "Save as type" box, select "All files."
  9. Click "Save."
  10. Close Notepad.
  11. On your Desktop, double click "cuisine.reg".
  12. When asked if you are sure that you want to make this change, click "Yes."
  13. In the box that says the change was successful, click "OK."
  14. The quick search is now ready. To use it, go to the Internet Explorer address bar (where you would normally type the address of a website), and type "cuisine" (without the quotes, of course), then a space, then whatever you wish to find in the Cuisine at Home forum (example: "cuisine focaccia"), and hit "ENTER."

  15. That's it! From now on, to search the Cuisine at Home forum, just use the "cuisine" quick search in the address bar.
