Trying to see if I could help in some way, I posted the following message in the forum of the developers of the software used on the C@H site:
Quote:

Many forum spammers, spambots, and pornbots register, then immediately post images and/or links. Most other BB packages have mods that will prohibit users under certain post counts from including any kinds of URLs (whether links or images) in their messages or signatures, but I haven't been able to find such a mod for UBB 6.5.2. This would be a very helpful tool in the fight against Spam.

So far, 24 hours after my posting the message, it has not even been read by anyone, let alone received any replies.

Just a little FYI C@H's competition, also HQ'd in Des Moines is shutting down entire magazines and laying people off left and right so maybe everyone is concentrating on ways to keep our basically advertising free magazine up and running as the economy continues to evolve? Something in my gut tells me that our "playroom" is not the highest priority to the publishers and bean-counters...

Apparently, they're not the only ones, as this article from Advertising Age. Some, though, have not completely disappeared, but now offer their content only on the Internet, instead of going through the expenses of printing and circulation.

I am not forum savvy, I am really only familiar with this one and the kilt-wearing forum my husband participates in. The moderators of his forum seem to be online 24/7. They participate more than most of the members and NOTHING slips by them. I have often thought that people like Jean, Rob and so forth should be the moderators. Or the moderators should be more like them. Not knowing if this is a paid position, I should probably keep my mouth shut. Just an observation.

As an example, one of the moderators of the kilt forum has posted 5,650 times since Feb '06.

LOL! Thanks. Actually, I have been a moderator on a few sites.

It all depends upon the people who own a site. Commercial sites often use existing employees (who also have other responsibilities) as forum moderators. When a forum is an integral part of a company's money-making efforts, they may appoint full-time, paid moderators. Otherwise, in most cases, being a moderator is a volunteer position. Either way, the choice of moderators is not something to take lightly, as I have seen one or two sites where one or more moderators had a falling out with other staff members or other moderators, and vandalised those sites before they could be dismissed. Of course, nowadays, that is a hazard of additional helpers on ANY website, and just last week, a disgruntled worker wiped out the site of an organisation that otherwise does a lot of good here, in Honduras. Fortunately, they were able to reconstruct it relatively quickly.

I know that I am a voice crying in the wilderness, but the thought of only offering publications via the internet is incredibly frustrating to me. Increasingly I am finding this is the only means available for some information, which leaves those of us who can only access the internet via dial-up virtually lost souls. It is making me crazy!

Still, I am not complaining about this site, I would very much hate to lose it. I wonder how much the "mother *****" checks/reads the forums. To me, the people that participate here are your target audience. I would want to keep close tabs on what they are thinking.

Sad commentary on today's society and ethics when a disgruntled employee could impose havoc on a web site like Labs described.

No way in H*LL would I ever be a moderator on another forum - once was enough. But I'm willing to nominate anyone else to the job.
